 # How we helped to rebuild the full donation journey for Kom op tegen Kanker

## Key takeaways

Kom op tegen Kanker wanted to remove friction from the entire fundraising journey, from creating a campaign or making a donation to processing everything correctly in Salesforce.

Bits of Love helped define the overarching approach and phased roadmap, then brought together UX, UI, frontend and integration expertise to make it happen. Instead of waiting for a multi-year systems overhaul, **we introduced a custom integration layer and rebuilt the user journeys around it.**

The result: fundraising pages are created roughly five times faster, while administrative failures in the new flows have become virtually negligible.

## Generosity shouldn’t need paperwork

Giving money sounds simple. Behind every donation, however, sits **a complex mix of fiscal rules, payments, campaign logic and internal processing**.

In Belgium, different types of donations require different information. Private donors may need to provide their national register number for a tax certificate, companies follow different rules, and money raised through a personal campaign is treated differently again.

Those rules are necessary. **Supporters should not have to understand them**.

Yet too much of that complexity reached the user. Creating a fundraising campaign was cumbersome, donors encountered friction during payment, and behind-the-scenes direct dependencies on the CRM slowed interactions and created exceptions that required manual follow-up. The new fundraising platform also had to work alongside existing digital products and systems, making **a phased transformation essential**.

The friction existed at every level:

**Create. Give. Process.**

Our challenge was not simply to redesign a donation form. Building on the strategy, priorities and user insights already developed internally, we worked closely with Kom op tegen Kanker’s digital strategy team to translate that groundwork into a phased digital solution and define how the complete fundraising ecosystem could evolve step by step, without waiting for a multi-year transformation.

## One donation engine, many reasons to give

We started by redesigning the journey, not the screens.

Together with Kom op tegen Kanker’s digital strategy team, we mapped user stories, challenged existing processes and translated everything into a shared functional analysis and full prototypes. We continuously shaped and validated strategy, UX decisions, priorities, and requirements **together.** We separated essential requirements from future ambitions and defined a phased approach that could create value quickly without compromising the longer-term architecture.

**Only then did we start designing.**

### 1. “Steun”: a donation flow that does the thinking

The new donation flow removes complexity for the donor.

The end-user experience now supports general donations, donations to a specific cause and contributions to personal fundraisers. The right context stays intact from the first click onwards, including existing campaign links and tracking.

The **flow adapts automatically** to the donation type and donor. Fiscal information only appears when relevant, forms change for individuals and companies, and supporters are clearly informed when a tax certificate does or does not apply.

**Payments support familiar methods** such as Bancontact, Payconiq and credit card, with alternative flows where payment limits require them.

The rules behind “giving” remain complex.

**The donor simply no longer has to think about them.**

### 2. “Doe mee”: turn participation into fundraising

Kom op tegen Kanker also wanted to reach new supporters through existing sports events, rather than organizing every event themselves.

The Plug-in model makes that possible.

Participants can join partner events such as the Nationaal Park Marathon, Sofico Gent Marathon, and We Ride Flanders, and use their participation to raise money for Kom op tegen Kanker.

Creating a personal fundraising page now takes roughly **one fifth of the time** it used to.

Participants choose an event, discipline, and distance, create their page within minutes, and track donations and progress in one place. Registration capacity, deadlines, T‑shirt information and start codes are handled automatically behind the scenes.

What feels like **a simple participant journey is actually a tightly connected flow of registrations, payments, fundraising targets and event data**.

## The integration layer that changed the architecture

Improving the screens alone would never have solved the full problem.

The existing setup depended too directly on the CRM. That made interactions slower, created fragile dependencies and made new digital experiences harder to evolve.

Instead of introducing another heavy enterprise platform, **we designed a lightweight custom integration layer between the user-facing products and Kom op tegen Kanker’s internal systems**.

Together with the digital strategy team and their Salesforce partner, we redesigned the data flows endpoint by endpoint. Data can now be cached and processed asynchronously, so slower Salesforce responses no longer affect the user experience. When something goes wrong, processes can fail safely without leaving incomplete records behind.

The result is a faster, more reliable experience for supporters, fewer administrative exceptions for the internal team, and less dependence on a specific CRM setup, vendor, or license model.

**Most importantly, this architectural shift could happen incrementally, without waiting for a multi-year transformation before users started seeing the benefits.**

## Strategy first, specialists where they matter

A transformation like this crosses traditional disciplines.

Kom op tegen Kanker’s digital strategy team played a central role throughout the project: shaping the strategy, setting priorities, making UX and product choices, aligning internal stakeholders and coordinating the different partners involved.

Bits of Love worked alongside that team, as well as Kom op tegen Kanker’s CEO, business units and external partners, helping translate that direction into a **phased approach and keeping the different disciplines and dependencies moving together**.

From there, specialists from our team could go deep where needed: challenging the user journeys, designing the interfaces, building the frontend and creating the integration architecture underneath it, always in close collaboration with the digital strategy team.

Because strategy, UX, design and technology were treated as one product challenge rather than separate projects, decisions could be made faster and with the full system in mind.

That allowed Kom op tegen Kanker to **improve the experience immediately** while steadily moving towards **a stronger long-term architecture**.

### **Less friction today. A stronger foundation for tomorrow.**

The new platform has only recently launched, but the operational impact is already clear.

Creating a fundraising page is roughly **five times faster**, while administrative exceptions in the new flows have become virtually negligible.

More importantly, Kom op tegen Kanker now has a foundation that can keep evolving. New partner events can largely be added through configuration, donation functionality can be reused for new fundraising formats, and the integration layer can evolve independently from the systems behind it.

That foundation is the result of a close collaboration between Kom op tegen Kanker’s digital strategy team, Bits of Love and the other specialist partners involved.

**The result is not just a better donation flow, but a fundraising platform designed to keep removing friction as it grows.**
